Europe does not need America
Trump and the Republicans catastrophically misread the situation. They bet that Europe would give in to Trump’s demands and fall further under U.S. control. The Trump-Republican regime could not have been more wrong. (European Commission)
The United States created the world’s most powerful alliance network and led it for 80 years. Creating and leading is not the same as being indispensable. With Trump and the Republicans withdrawing, Europe is creating a future in which it is economically and militarily strong and secure without the U.S. - without the U.S. as the leader or maybe without the U.S. at all. (European Commission)
Americans need to understand what it means.
Europe is not a collection of weak nations that need American protection to survive.
The European Union has 452 million people, more than the United States. (Eurostat)
With Britain, Norway, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand, the total is nearly 776 million people, more than twice America’s population. (UN Population Data)
The EU’s economy is worth $21.2 trillion, compared with America’s $30.8 trillion. (IMF, World Economic Outlook)
Together, the EU and the other nation’s economies total $36.5 trillion, nearly 19% larger than America’s. (IMF, World Economic Outlook)
These nations are already close economic and security partners, with the population, wealth, industries, and military capabilities to build a powerful future without American leadership or participation. In the early stages of this transition, they are not just continuing their relationships; they are strengthening and expanding, both militarily and economically. (Council of the European Union; EU-Canada Alliance for the Future)
Europe still relies on American intelligence, logistics, and certain military technologies. Replacing those capabilities will take years and substantial investment. (International Institute for Strategic Studies; European Parliament) But Europe has the wealth, industrial capacity, and political institutions needed to replace the U.S., and it is moving in that direction. (European Commission)
The greater long-term risk is to America.
American power was never based on military strength alone. It came from alliances that gave Washington access to foreign markets, military bases, intelligence networks, and diplomatic support. Without those partnerships, America loses influence over international decisions. Its businesses face greater competition from trade agreements negotiated without Washington. Its military has fewer options, and its government has less influence over global security.
Meanwhile, Europe is strengthening its relationships with countries that share its economic and security interests. (European External Action Service; Council of the European Union)
The United States helped create this international system after World War II. It supplied leadership, resources, and military protection. In return, it gained extraordinary economic and political influence and advantage.
The U.S. will shift from global leader and superpower to just one of the many players.
That is the consequence Americans should consider.

Europe doesn’t need the USA but it wants the USA.
